Following the 1667 publication of John Milton’s Paradise Lost, many artists began to explore imagery of the Infernal in the same detailed care as they did the Divine. L’Ange Dechu (Fallen Angel) Created in 1847 by Alexandre Cabanel, depicts a fallen angel in despair, complex in its emotions and body sculpted to the perfection that catholic angels are known to possess, a side to the story that had not previously been explored.
